Operation AXIOM: The Space Age—The 40th Anniversary of S.T.S.-51-J (№ 21), Part I
3-4 October 1985: The Space Shuttle Atlantis OV-104 lifted off from Florida's K.S.C. with CDR "Bo" Bobko, Pilot Ron Grabe, M.S.1 Dave Hilmers, M.S.2/F.E. Bob Stewart, & P.S.1 Bill Pailes; the quintet deployed a Department of Defense payload, now known to be two Defense Satellite Communications System (D.S.C.S.-III) satellites, using an Inertial Upper Stage; the mission remains formally classified.
Commentary: S.T.S.-51-J was the first flight of the Atlantis OV-104.
