28 October 1925: Tutankhamun's Mummy—Howard Carter & his team opened the innermost of three nested coffins, within a sarcophagus, revealing the mummy of Tutankhamun & its magnificent death mask, possibly the single most famous artifact from ancient Egypt; Tutankhamun's was the only royal mummy found undisturbed, but was partially dismembered to extract the mummy from the coffin.
