This Week in Motorsport
Only a fortnight remains 'til the first Formula One grand prix of 2010, the Bahrain Grand Prix! Asked about the new, larger fuel tanks in this year's cars (refueling has been banned, the cars now have to start the race carrying all the fuel they'll need to finish it), Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel quipped, "The cars are longer—we are limo-drivers now." Welcome to the knee-slapping world of F1!

This is going to be my first full F1 season, kids, and I am determined to watch all nineteen—19!—grands prix (all seventeen from '09, plus the return of the Grand Prix du Canada & the inaugural Korean Grand Prix)! Bahrain! Australia! Malaysia! China! Spain! Monaco! Turkey! Canada! "Europe" (Spain again)! Britain! Germany! Hungary! Belgium! Italy! Singapore! Japan! Korea! Brazil! Abu Dhabi!

Formula One? Formula fun!

Maybe this season, I'll join you. I'll see what happens.

I'd be glad for the F1 company, The Guy, but of greater import to me is convincing you; all the rest of The Secret Base's beloved readership; and indeed every Tom, Dick, & Harry that I can find to embrace the 24 Hours of Le Mans as one of the truly great spectacles in sport. 12-13 June 2010, "By endurance we conquer."

Never thought about it, never considered it, never bothered. But your strenuous, even giddy, support has convinced me there must be something to it.

Now, what do I do?

{Un} Watch Steve McQueen's film Le Mans, which is almost more akin to a documentary than a drama.

{Deux} Watch the documentary Truth in 24, chronicling the Audi team before and during the '08 24 Heures du Mans.

If neither of those tickle your fancy, Le Mans may well not be for you. But I urge you to think about the glorious madness of it all: a road race that lasts twenty-four consecutive hours, an event designed intentionally to destroy both men and machines. Yes, I become giddy just thinking about it.

Merci. Je suis heureux d'apprendre; it's never too late.

(See what a good salesperson you are?)
