Project BLACK MAMBA

Today is the Memorial of Saint Charles Borromeo, Bishop (1538-1584): Saint-link ūnus, Saint-link duo, & Wikipedia-link.

Commentary: Wayback Machine. Quoth the Holy Redeemer bulletin:
The patron against ulcers; apple orchards; bishops; catechists; catechumins; colic; intestinal disorders; Lombard, Italy; Monterey, California; cardinals; seminarians; spiritual directors; spiritual leaders; starch makers; stomach diseases.
This list is worded imprecisely. Are we meant to understand that St. Charles Borromeo is the patron against seminarians & catechists? Good grief!

Quoth the Holy Family bulletin:
Charles was born of a noble family at Arona, near Lake Maggiore. At the age of twenty-one, he graduated from the University of Pavia with doctorates in canon & civil law. He was ordained a priest at age twenty-four & served in the Vatican. His uncle, Pope Pius IV, named him a cardinal & archbishop of Milan. His condemnation of the excesses & abuses in the offices of the Roman Curia made him unpopular with certain [persons]. He returned to Milan to serve as archbishop for eighteen years. He established seminaries & schools for the young. He also established a confraternity for adoration of the Holy Eucharist. He was popular among the people because of his many good works. He assisted in parishes & was faithful to & encouraged the clergy in prayer. He personally visited & assisted the victims of the plague in 1576. He encouraged his clergy to strive that all they do might be a work of love. "This is the way we can easily overcome the countless difficulties we have to face day after day, which, after all, are part of our work. In meditation we find the strength to bring Christ to birth in ourselves & in others." St. Charles Borromeo is the patron saint of seminarians.

Saint Quote of the week:
"If a tiny spark of God's love already burns within you, do not expose it to the wind, for it may get blown out. Keep the stove tightly shut so that it will not lose its heat & grow cold. In other words, avoid distractions as well as you can. Saty quiet with God. Do not spend your time in useless chatter."—St. Charles Borromeo, 4 November
