This is the oldest & highest ranking of the four major basilicas in Rome. This basilica is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome, the official ecclesiastical seat of the Holy Father.Quoth the Holy Family bulletin:
The basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, not St. Peter's basilica, is the cathedral of the diocese of Rome. It was erected around the year 324 by the emperor Constantine. This feast began to be celebrated universally in 1565. This feast reminds us that although we may belong to different parishes, we are all united in the universal Church of which this basilica is a symbol. Traditionally, the Pope celebrates Mass of the Lord's Supper in St. John Lateran on Holy Thursday. We also remember Saint Ursinus of Bourges (third century), bishop: Saint-link & Wikipedia-link.
We further remember Saint Benignus of Armagh (died 467), bishop: Saint-link & Wikipedia-link.
