Operation AXIOM: The World War
24-29 April 1916: The Easter Rising—Irish nationalists in Dublin, in cahoots with & armed by the Germans, declared the whole of Ireland, then a constituent part of the United Kingdom, an independent republic; the Crown crushed the rebellion with overwhelming force, including bombarding the city with heavy artillery; the civilian death toll increased Irish popular support for independence.
Lest we forget.
Commentary: It is an idiosyncrasy of the modern Republic of Ireland that the Easter Rising is commemorated every year at Easter, a highly moveable feast, not on the dates 24-29 April.
