Commentary: "Cardassians" marks the return of "plain, simple" Garak for the first time since his debut early in season one. The episode is a sensitive examination of the lingering hatred between Bajorans & Cardassians, the internal rivalries between Cardassians with the war orphans abandoned on Bajor used as pawns, & decent everyman Miles O'Brien's casual bias against Cardassians, motivated by his traumatic wartime experiences. Chief O'Brien begins to reform after Mrs. O'Brien, Keiko, chastises him for his ugly words.
