21 February 1994: C.I.A. officer Aldrich Ames was arrested for spying against the United States since 1985, for first the Soviet Union & later the Russian Federation; up to twenty-five American sources inside the Soviet Union were executed due to Ames's betrayal; ostentatious displays of wealth were ignored for years; Ames passed polygraphs in 1986 & 1991, despite identifiably deceptive responses.
