Episode o' the Day
"Melora" (season two, episode six; 1 November 1993): Wikipedia-link.
Commentary: A wheelchair bound character was an early idea for the regular cast of Deep Space Nine, but was discared due to the inherent production difficulties, an issue that was then paralleled by the on-screen adaptations to Starbase Deep Space 9. Due to the realities of television production during the 1960s, 1980s, 1990s, & 2000s, the overwhelming majority of sapient aliens seen on Star Trek are humanoid oxygen-breathers accustomed to Earth's surface gravity. As a one-off, it was gratifying to explore how an officer from a low-gravity world would adapt to & strive in 1 g.
"Melora" marks the first, but not the last time that Doctor Bashir will fall in love with his patient of the week.
