He was a member of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary, a missionary religious institute. He won recognition for his ministry from 1873 to 1889 in the Kingdom of Hawai'i to (persons) with leprosy who were required to live under a government-sanctioned medical quarantine on the island of Moloka'i.

Today, Thursday, 12 May is the Optional Memorial of Saints Nereus & Achilleus, Martyrs (died circa 98), martyred under the emperor Trajan: Martyrs-link, Martyr-link November, Martyr-link Alpha, & Wikipedia-link.

Commentary: Quoth the Holy Redeemer bulletin:
Historical mention of the two saints tells how Nereus & Achilleus as soldiers were obedient to the tyrant, but suddenly being converted to Christianity, joyfully resigned their commissions & died martyrs' deaths.
Quoth the Holy Family bulletin:
Ss. Nereus & Achilleus were at first enrolled in the military tribunal, but both left the military once they had converted to the faith. For this faith they were condemned to death... Their sepulcher is preserved in the cemetery on the Ardeatine Way were a basilica has been constructed in their honor.
'Tis also the Optional Memorial of Saint Pancras, Martyr (died circa 304), martyred under the emperor Diocletian: Martyr-link ūnus, Martyr-link duo, & Wikipedia-link.

Commentary: Quoth the Holy Redeemer bulletin:
St. Pancras was a Syrian boy of pagan origin who went to Rome & was converted to Christianity.
Quoth the Holy Family bulletin:
St. Pancras died at Rome probably during the Diocletian(ic) persecution. He was beheaded at the age of fourteen. His tomb over which Pope (St.) Symmachus (19 July) built a church is preserved on the Aurelian Way.
