Operation AXIOM: The World War
March-December 1916: The "Fokker Scourge" was ended when the French organized fighter-only squadrons, Escadrilles de chasse, equipped with Nieuport 11s; the Germans responded with Kampfeinsitzer Kommando formations & biplane fighters, including the Halberstadt D.II & Albatros D.I; the British introduced the Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter; & trench strafing became a fixture of the war.

Lest we forget.

Commentary: By May 1916, Manfred Freiherr von Richthofen, immortalized as the "Red Baron," had completed training as a pilot in the Imperial German Flying Corps, & had probably shot down at least two Entente aircraft, though he had yet to receive official credit for his first aerial kill.
