11 January-13 March 1917: The British raided & probed along the Ancre battlefront to test new tactics & weapons, to gather intelligence, & to divert German attention away from preparations for a looming British offensive at Arras; the Germans continued construction of elaborate defensive works known as the "Hindenburg Line" (or Siegfried Position, Siegfriedstellung) & preparations for withdrawal to same.
