Operation AXIOM: Destination Moon—The 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11, Part I
16 July 1969: Apollo 11 lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins, & Lunar Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin aboard the Command & Service Module Columbia atop a Saturn V rocket also carrying the Lunar Module Eagle; one million spectators witnessed the launch, including incumbent U.S. vice president Spiro Agnew.
