Operation AXIOM: The Space Race—The 61st Anniveraries of Mercury-Redstones 1 & 1A
21 November & 19 December 1960: Mercury 1 started to lift off from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, until the Redstone rocket shut off & fell back to the launch pad; the escape rocket lifted off, leaving the unmanned Mercury capsule behind; Mercury 1A lifted off for a suborbital flight of the same capsule, which splashed down in the Atlantic & was recovered by the U.S.S. Valley Forge.
