25 December 1921: Eugene V. Debs was released from the United States Penitentiary, Atlanta, where he had been imprisoned since 13 April 1919 for opposing the draft during the World War; Debs was not pardoned, rather his sentence was commuted by President Harding, who received Debs at the White House; fifty thousand well-wishers greeted Debs's return to his home of Terre Haute, Indiana.Lest we forget.
