5 October 1921: The Sturmabteilung (S.A., "Storm Detachment") was founded as a paramilitary organ of the Nazi Party (N.S.D.A.P.), to prevent Nazi rallies from being disrupted by the paramilitaries from other political parties & to disrupt the rallies of those other political parties; the sobriquet "Brownshirts" came from wearing war surplus uniforms originally intended for colonial troops in German East Africa.
