6 December 1921: The Anglo-Irish Treaty—Articles of Agreement for a Treaty Between Great Britain & Ireland was signed in London, providing for the creation of an Irish Free State as a dominion within the British Empire & allowing Northern Ireland to opt out of the Free State & remain within the United Kingdom; the Dáil was deeply divided & only narrowly ratifed the Treaty, sparking the Irish Civil War.
