Commentary: "Hard Time" is one of the finest hours of Star Trek ever produced. It is the most extreme example of the "O'Brien must suffer" ethos, & references the events of several other "O'Brien must suffer" episodes (T.N.G.'s "The Wounded" & D.S.9's "Whispers" & "Tribunal"). It is also a sober examination of post-traumatic stress disorder & suicidal ideation. I highly recommend "Hard Time" to all, even those poor benighted souls who don't otherwise enjoy Star Trek.
