He's Dead, Jim

My father wishes to set aside "several hours" to discuss my health & my mother's health. By this he does not mean to have a back-&-forth discussion, to throw ourselves into the hurley-burley of the marketplace of ideas; he means that he wishes to spend several hours delivering (based on previous experience) several poorly-organized, only loosely-connected diatribes on a wide variety of topics, culminating in my expected adoption of his "naturopathic" beliefs. Those beliefs? He claims that "prescription drugs" kill more persons a year than they save. He claims that "ninety to ninety-five per cent of diseases can be cured"—not merely prevented, but actively cured—"through the proper diet." He claims that anyone who takes a prescription drug is a fool, though this did not stop him from taking a prescription painkiller when he needed one. (Hey, do as the great man says, not as the great man does.) Also, he claims that vaccines kill more persons than they save; regarding the current measles outbreak, he says that if the afflicted children had been raised on the proper diet, they would have been naturally immune to the measles. So, yes, I'm sure I'll be adopting his naturopathic beliefs straightaway.

Commentary:

"In a book in a box, high upon a shelf,
In a locked and guarded vault,
Are the things I keep only for myself,
It's your fate, but it's not your fault…"
