Scripture of the Week
Mass Readings
The Book of Exodus, chapter thirty-two, verses seven thru eleven, thirteen, & fourteen;
Psalm Fifty-one, verses three, four, twelve, thirteen, seventeen, & nineteen;
The First Letter to Timothy, chapter one, verses twelve thru seventeen;
The Gospel according to Luke, chapter fifteen, verses one thru thirty-two
(or, the Gospel according to Luke, chapter fifteen, verses one thru ten).

Commentary: Long form of today's Gospel is the whole of Luke, 15, comprising three parables: the Parable of the Lost Sheep (15:1-7), the Parable of the Lost Coin (15:8-10), & the Parable of the Lost Son (15:11-32), A.K.A. the Prodigal Son. Either today's short form or an alternate short form composed of Luke 15:11-32 would already be a fairly lengthy Gospel reading. The long form might well be the longest Mass reading outside one of the major feasts, such as Christmas or the Easter Triduum.

A joke about the lengthiness of today's readings from Father James Mangan, told this morning at St. John Vianney: "I always tell the congregation, 'Short Gospel, long homily; long Gospel, long homily.'"

Personal Reading
The First Book of Samuel chapter sixteen (verses one thru twenty-three).

Commentary: Samuel Sent to Bethlehem (16:1-13), Saul's Spirit of Melancholy (16:14-18), & David Made Armor-Bearer (16:19-23).
