Episode o' the Day
"The Search, Part I" (season three, episode one; 26 September 1994): Wikipedia-link.
Commentary: The autumn of 1994 was the only period in the seven seasons of Deep Space Nine when it was the only first-run Star Trek show on television: The Next Generation had ended in May 1994 & Voyager would not debut until January 1995. Those were heady days, as D.S.9 soared to new storytelling heights with the Dominion & as we awaited eagerly the first T.N.G. feature film, Star Trek Generations, & the debut of Voyager.
"The Search, Part I" introduced the U.S.S. Defiant, the tough little ship that would be the bane of the Jem'Hadar, the Cardassians, & the Klingons for the next four & half seasons. New Starfleet communicator badges, designed for Generations, first debuted here; the biggest improvement over the original T.N.G. badges was a more distinct Starfleet delta. Two significant recurring characters were introduced, the Female Changeling (played by Salome Jens) & Michael Eddington (played by Kenneth Marshall).
"The Search, Part I" is the middle act of a three-episode story, with "The Jem'Hadar" & "The Search, Part II." As such, the episode ends with our heroes in maximum peril: the Defiant is dead in space, surrounded by Jem'Hadar warships, & her crew are either captured by the Dominion or missing in action.
