He was a Spanish Jesuit priest & missionary born in Verdú (Catalonia) who, due to his life & work, became the patron saint of slaves, the Republic of Colombia, & ministry to African-Americans. During the forty years of his ministry in Colombia it is estimated he personally baptized around three hundred thousand [persons]. He is also patron saint of seafarers.St. Peter Claver, S.J. is featured in Thomas J. Craughwell's collection of short biographies, Saints Behaving Badly, wherein his chapter is titled "St. Peter Claver, Dithering Novice."
