The Rebel Black Dot Song of the Day: SKApril!

The Aquabats!, "The Story of Nothing!" from The Fury of the Aquabats! (Captain Thumbs Up!)

Skammentary!: The Aquabats! are so relentlessly positive that they wear Anti-Negativity Helmets. Yet, such are the bitter, heartbroken conventions of ska-punk, especially as it emerged from the Southern California ska scene in the '90s, that "The Story of Nothing!" is the story of heartache & loss.
"What's wrong? I'm standing over here,
It's just too weird that she can't see me,
It's like she waved her magic wand
And somehow turned me into—

"Nothing!
Let's talk about something else,
I'm starting not to see myself,
She went so far away,
But I still see her every day!
Nothing!
Let's talk about something else,
Can't see myself with anyone else,
Please, oh, please
Let's talk about something else
Before I cry: Waaaa! Waaaa! Waaaa!

"She can't see me, but I can,
I guess I am the invisible man!
She can't see what could be,
Nothing hurts worse than being nothing.
The invisible man!
Some things are hard to understand,
The invisible man!
Nothing's worse than—
She can't see me, but I can,
I guess I am the invisible man!
She can't see what could be,
Changed her mind and turned me into nothing!"
